Product details

Nifurantin® – an overview

Active ingredient: nitrofurantoin

Indication:

Nifurantin® 50 mg, Nifurantin® 100 mg and Nifurantin® B6 are indicated for the treatment of acute, uncomplicated urinary tract infections (bladder infections) in women. For this, the underlying pathogens must be sensitive to the antibiotic.

If it is not possible to take other (lower-risk) antibiotics or chemotherapeutics, Nifurantin® can also be used in the following cases:

  • For the prevention of urinary tract infections in the event of obstructed urine flow
  • For the prevention of recurrent, chronic urinary tract infections

Due to its high dosage, Nifurantin® with 50 or 100 mg is not suitable for children. However, Nifuretten®, which contains only 20 mg of the active ingredient, can be used here.

Dosage, type and duration of use:

The doctor decides on the duration of use and dosage of Nifurantin® depending on the severity of the symptoms and the patient's weight. For the treatment of an acute, uncomplicated urinary tract infection, the recommended daily dose for adults and children is 5 mg nitrofurantoin per kilogram of the patient's body weight.

The dosage of Nifurantin® for the treatment of acute uncomplicated bladder infections is as follows:

  • For Nifurantin® 50 mg: 6 to 8 tablets a day in 3 to 4 single doses
  • For Nifurantin® 100 mg: 3 to 4 tablets a day in 3 to 4 single doses

It is important that Nifurantin® tablets are taken at approximately the same time every day, at roughly equal intervals of 6 to 8 hours and swallowed with plenty of water. It is best taken with or just after a meal, as this improves the effect and tolerability of the antibiotic.

Important: serious, sometimes life-threatening pulmonary reactions can rarely occur when Nifurantin® is taken. If patients experience symptoms such as shortness of breath, cough, fever or chest pain, treatment should be stopped and medical advice sought immediately.
